What “nearest” means
Each town page ranks passenger airports that are eligible for this comparison. There are 18 of them. A closer airfield can exist on the map and still stay off that ranking when the source does not list it as a passenger airport in the comparison.
The three labels below are the ones printed on airport rows. A listed flight is not a promise that a seat is on sale today. No regular flights listed is not the same as closed.

How the kilometres are calculated
Straight-line distance. The haversine formula uses an Earth radius of 6371 km. The page shows the nearest integer, with halves rounded away from zero. Sort order uses the unrounded distance, then the numeric source id. A 30 km result is not a 30-minute drive.
The gap between first and second is the unrounded distances subtracted, then rounded. The 150 km and 300 km bands use the unrounded distance as well.
What the dates mean
Airport data updated 13 October 2026. City data updated 13 October 2026. In the production schedule, airport, region and runway files refresh daily at 06:00 Africa/Johannesburg, and the town files refresh on the 1st of the month. This handoff snapshot applied the files it was given. A shared clock on this build does not mean both datasets change every day.
GeoNames record-modified dates, passenger-service review dates and editorial review dates are separate. A download does not move a review date.
